Frequently Asked Questions About Checkout Counters

Most retail stores use a 48-inch to 72-inch checkout counter. Small boutiques can get by with a 48-inch counter. Medium stores typically need 60 inches for a POS system, bag area, and impulse items. High-volume stores may need 72 inches or longer. Depth is usually 20-24 inches to accommodate a register, receipt printer, and bagging space.

A checkout counter with a built-in glass display is excellent for high-margin impulse items like accessories, small electronics, or add-on products. Smoke shops and jewelry stores especially benefit from display-integrated checkout counters. It maximizes the point-of-sale area by combining the register zone with a last-chance product showcase.

Place your checkout counter near the exit but not directly blocking it. The right side of the store entrance is most common (customers naturally turn right when entering and end up at the left/rear, flowing toward a right-side checkout). Avoid placing checkout too close to the entrance โ€” customers should walk through the store before reaching the register.

Standard checkout counters come in common sizes and configurations but can be adapted. You can add display case sections, shelving underneath, slatwall on the front face for accessories, and ADA-compliant lowered sections. For fully custom counters, many fixture suppliers offer made-to-order options โ€” contact us for custom configurations.
