Gridwall is slatwall's mobile cousin — a 2x6 or 4x6 wire grid panel that stands free with a base or attaches to a wall. Cheaper than slatwall, faster to set up, and easy to relocate. Small, high-value items — jewelry, electronics, glasses — belong in locking glass display cases. Bulk inventory and packaged goods belong on gondola shelving. Mismatched fixtures (cheap items locked behind glass, or premium watches sitting on a wire grid) confuse customers about how to value your product.
Measure your usable retail floor (not the total leased space — subtract restrooms, back-of-house, and aisles you need to keep clear). For a typical small shop under 1,500 sq ft, gondolas should be 54 or 60 inches tall — anything taller blocks sight lines from the front door. For larger stores 3,000+ sq ft, 72-inch and 84-inch gondolas are fine because customers expect a "warehouse" feel. Glass cases are usually 38 or 42 inches tall (counter height) and 48, 60, or 70 inches wide.
Powder-coated steel (gondolas, racks) is the workhorse — almost indestructible, but limited to a few colors. Melamine and laminate (display cases, counters) look like wood for a third the price but chip on impact. Real wood and veneered MDF feel premium but cost more and need refinishing every 5-10 years. For most retailers, the right blend is steel where strength matters and laminate where appearance matters.
If you cannot afford every fixture you eventually want, buy the right fixtures for the front 60% of your store first — the section customers see in the first 30 seconds. Spend less on back-of-store fixtures or use temporary gridwall there until cash flow supports the full buildout.
