● WHAT JEWELRY STORE OWNERS ACTUALLY NEED

In a Jewelry Store, the Lighting Is Half the Product

Nothing else we sell depends on light the way jewelry does. The same ring reads warm and rich under one bulb and flat and grey under another, and customers cannot tell you why โ€” they just do not reach for the flat one. That is the single most common thing we fix on jewelry floors: cases lit with whatever LED strip was cheapest, in mixed colour temperatures, so identical merchandise looks mismatched from case to case. The second is security theatre โ€” cases that look locked but use display latches a determined hand can pop. After fifteen years of outfitting jewelers we plan the room around three things: consistent colour temperature chosen for what each case holds, tempered glass with real commercial locks, and a mix of tower and horizontal cases that lets a customer walk the room without ever losing sight of a salesperson. Get those right and the merchandise sells itself; get them wrong and you discount to make up for it.

● LOAD, LAYOUT & SECURITY

Lighting, Glass, and Case Layout for Jewelers

LED colour temperature: warm for gold, cool for diamonds

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and it changes how metal and stone read. Warm light in the 2700โ€“3000K range flatters yellow gold, rose gold, and warm gemstones โ€” it brings out the richness people associate with fine jewelry. Cooler light around 5000โ€“6500K makes diamonds and white metals look brighter and whiter, closer to daylight, which is why diamond cases are usually lit cooler than gold cases. The rule that matters most: be consistent within a sightline. Two adjacent cases at different temperatures make the same merchandise look mismatched, and the warmer case will look dingy by comparison.

Tempered glass and locks that are actually locks

Every case on an open jewelry floor should be tempered glass with a commercial-grade lock. Tempered glass matters for safety as much as security โ€” it fails into blunt fragments rather than shards. On locks, the distinction is between a display latch that keeps a case closed and a commercial lock that resists someone who wants in; only the second belongs on a jewelry floor. Worth a separate conversation with your insurer, too: carriers often have expectations about what stays in the cases overnight versus what goes in the safe, and it is cheaper to design the floor around that than to retrofit it.

Tower cases versus horizontal cases

Horizontal cases are the browsing workhorse โ€” a customer leans over them, and a salesperson works from the far side, so they set the rhythm of the room. Tower cases sell verticality: they put featured pieces at standing eye level, break up a long flat run, and work as the anchor customers walk toward from the door. Most showrooms want mostly horizontal cases with a tower or two placed where they pull people deeper into the room. Corner cases are the underrated third option, since they turn dead corner space into display without narrowing the walking path.

Sightlines: a case customers can circle sells more

Full-vision cases with glass on every side let a piece be seen from any angle, which is why they outperform against-the-wall cases for featured merchandise. Keep the room open enough that a customer never feels boxed in and staff never lose a line of sight to the door. Practical version: cases low enough to see over across the whole floor, height on the perimeter walls, and no fixture that creates a corner a salesperson cannot see from the counter.

Jewelry Display Questions

Match colour temperature to the metal and stone. Warm LED light around 2700โ€“3000K flatters yellow gold, rose gold, and warm gemstones; cooler light around 5000โ€“6500K makes diamonds and white metals read brighter and whiter. The mistake to avoid is mixing temperatures across cases a customer sees at once โ€” identical merchandise looks mismatched and the warmer case looks dingy. Our full-vision and half-vision showcases are LED-ready, and LED kits can be added to cases without built-in lighting.

Yes. Our jewelry showcases use tempered glass with commercial-grade locks, and our wall and tower cases lock as well. Tempered glass matters for safety as much as security, since it breaks into blunt fragments rather than shards. It is worth checking with your insurance carrier about what they expect to be in the cases versus the safe overnight, then designing the floor around that.

Most showrooms want both. Horizontal cases are the browsing workhorse โ€” customers lean over them and staff work from the opposite side. Tower cases put featured pieces at standing eye level, break up a long run of horizontals, and pull customers deeper into the room. A common layout is a horizontal counter run with one or two towers placed as anchors, plus corner cases to use space that would otherwise go dead.

A run of locking full-vision or half-vision showcases, LED lighting planned as a single consistent scheme, wall cases for premium collections and behind-counter inventory, corner cases to use the corners, and slatwall for packaged goods and gift items. Send us your floor plan and store type and we will spec the run โ€” layout help is free with a fixture quote.
